Beginner’s Guide to Vision Boards (Why Every Mom Needs One!)
Did your family goals take a hiatus once the world turned upside down?
Did discouragement come at you from all sides? Are you ready to RISE ABOVE your current circumstances?
If you are, then let me show you how in this Beginner’s Guide to Vision Boards.
What is a Vision Board?
Here is a simple definition I found on Google. What would we do without Google?
Vision Board: A collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes or goals, intended to serve as inspiration or motivation.
Definition from Oxford Languages
Some common misconceptions are that it needs to be public. Or that your goals need to be written in a particular way.
They need to follow the SMART system or any other linear way to achieve their goals.
Well, what if your brain works differently?
Trust me, it takes more than great ideas just floating around in your head.
Learning this simple truth changed everything.
How to get started with a Vision Board
Here are some ideas to get your imagination going!
- Framed cork board
- Notebook
- On a door
- On a mirror
- Poster Board
- Front of a Journal
These are just some of the things you can choose to begin envisioning your life. I recommend starting with something small. When I led an online success challenge, we started with a simple notebook.
I love this idea so that you can get your creative juices flowing right away. Next, I would encourage you to begin with a framed corkboard.
I repurposed one I found in the garage at our old home. (We now live in our dream home after applying the steps I am sharing!!!)
You may not believe this, but I was a skeptic at first. You would think that the woman who loves to inspire others would have been all over it.
Nope. Not at first.
Perfectionism kept getting in the way.
But God is so good. He will take you to the right place, the right time, WHEN you TRUST HIM, and take a small step forward.
Forward progress is what we are after. That means trying something even when you aren’t sure how it will work.
Tips for Creating a Powerful Vision Board:
- Use images that capture the feeling you are after.
- Favorite verses and quotes pack a powerful punch.
- Look at it every day with a grateful heart.
- Imagine how God is working on your behalf.
- Create goals that reflect who you are becoming.
Common Questions/FAQ About a Vision Board
1.) What is a Vision Board?
It is a simple tool to get crystal clear about your values and goals.
You can use a journal, corkboard, or poster board.
This is exciting! It’s the physical manifestation of the amazing ideas floating around in your head.
When I focus on the goals and images on my vision board, I know it is only a matter of time until it happens.
All I need to do is my part. God gives us the desires of our hearts when we align them with His vision for our lives.
With faith and perseverance, you can take small action steps towards any goal.
2.) Do Vision Boards Actually Work?
Absolutely! It flips a switch in your brain. You know how when you are shopping for a car, all of a sudden you start to see it everywhere? What seemed impossible before now seems possible! This is thanks to the RAS (Reticular Activating System) in your incredible brain.
It helps you FOCUS and BE INSPIRED & GRATEFUL when you face stumbling blocks. When we were putting offers on our dream home, the pictures and verses I posted compelled me to keep trusting God in the process. At times, it was my lifeline!!!
3.) Is it similar to a “Bucket List?”
It is similar because people refer to it as experiences of a lifetime. When I was a teenager, skydiving was on my bucket list.
It is different because, on my Vision Board, I will only focus on goals or dreams that I know I will go after that are true to who I am TODAY. (I value certainty more than uncertainty as a wife and mom of three.) * That’s just me- I know some people who LOVE the thrill of jumping out of a plane!
4.) What should you put on your Vision Board?
Anything that inspires you and gets you excited! Make sure you cover different areas of your life like family, fitness, travel, faith, etc. Here is an example: My husband and I have been married for twenty years! We had our honeymoon in Hawaii. We then named our first dog, Kona. Then, three kids later, we went back by ourselves for our 10th anniversary. Needless to say, we love Hawaii! Well, our kids have never been. So one of our family goals is to see the Island of Maui. So I made a photo collage in Canva to update the vision that God has placed in our hearts.
5.) What if you don’t even know where to start???
I am going to share some tips and truths that have helped me when I am feeling stuck. When I am overthinking something or doubting if it will even work for me, I take a moment to just BREATHE and center myself. If I am sitting, I will stand up, stretch and maybe even walk to another area.
Lately, I like to ask myself this leading question: “How hard is it to…?”
So for the Vision Board, I could ask myself, “How hard is it to go on Pinterest and get some ideas for a family vacation to Hawaii?” Not hard at all, and it sounds like fun. If I am still feeling anxious, I might even say out loud, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
The Last Thing You Need to Know about a Vision Board
I saved the best for last. Are you ready? If you ONLY take this piece of advice, then remember this!
You will come across many variations of a Vision Board. Some call it a Mood Board, some call it a Dream Board, you get the idea.
I actually call it a Faith Board. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
As I am co-creating our dreams with God for our family, I am filled with excitement and hope!
It is a physical, tangible way to see my values and what I need to focus on now.
I have seen so many blessings and answered prayers with this one faith tool!
